Regular oral examinations and hygiene cleanings at Driftwood Dental in Smithers can help you prevent any dental issues and keep your smile healthy.
Ideally twice a year, you should see your dentist for a routine oral exam, to give them the opportunity to identify any oral health issues and develop a plan to treat them accordingly.
During this exam, your dentist will closely inspect the condition of your teeth, jaw, bite and gums. Exams may also include an oral screening, dental x-rays and any other diagnostic procedures that my be needed.
Any part of the mouth can affect or surrounding tissues can become infected with oral cancer. During your exam, your dentist will look at your face, lips, tongue, throat, neck, tissues and gums for any signs of oral cancer which can be difficult to detect with the naked eye.
Keep your smile healthy between dental appointments by remembering to brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time. Floss at least once per day.
A deep cleaning of your teeth and gums is necessary to prevent and treat disease. Before or after each exam, your dental hygienist will complete one of these.
To start, a scaler will be used to remove any plaque buildup or tartar. Next, the hygienist will use a polisher topped with coarse toothpaste to remove any remaining stains or plaque, then conclude the cleaning with a thorough flossing of your teeth and gums.
If your dentist deems you or your child to be at high risk of tooth decay, a fluoride treatment may also be recommended. This natural mineral can help to rebuild the minerals in your tooth enamel to prevent or reverse tooth decay.
